A safety is good, but a touchdown is better.
Nate Berumen thought he had a defensive lineman's dream when he slammed Grace Davis running back Frankie Acala to the turf in the Spartans' end zone Friday night.
Instead, Berumen gave Hudson Buck an even bigger thrill when Acala fumbled and Buck recovered for a Vacaville touchdown.
The defensive score capped a 28-point first-quarter barrage that led Vacaville to a 49-0 rout of Grace Davis in the opening round of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I playoffs at Tom Zunino Stadium.
"We just kept attacking," said Berumen, who led a charged-up defense that held the Spartans to eight total yards the entire first half.
"Honestly, I didn't know what happened," Berumen added about the touchdown. "I still thought he had the ball, but I guess I hit it out and Hudson picked it up."
The early assault was more than enough for the Bulldogs, who survived a lackluster second quarter, five turnovers and 10 penalties to improve to 10-1 overall.
Vacaville, seeded second in the Division I bracket, will host No. 7 Pleasant Grove of Elk Grove next Friday at 7 p.m. The Eagles defeated Franklin of Elk Grove 28-7 in the first round.
The Bulldogs held the Grace Davis offense to three-and-outs on its first three possessions, while the offense took each of the ensuing punts and added quick-strike scoring drives.
Quincy Forte scored the first touchdown on a 7-yard run to cap a four-play, 41-yard march.
Jimmy Hines added the next two scores on runs of one and 79 yards, and Buck's recovery came just two plays after Hines' second burst.
Hines finished with 83 rushing yards and Forte added 80 ... in the first quarter.
"We jumped on them pretty good at the start," Vacaville head coach Mike Papadopoulos said. "Obviously we weren't as sharp in the second quarter, but the defense played solid all night."
Hines added his third touchdown on the first drive of the second half, and finished with 163 yards rushing.
Keith Leenders converted seven extra-point kicks.
Roman Hauser added 79 yards rushing, including touchdown runs of 10 and 11 yards.
Defensively, Buck, Berumen, Kalani Agbigay and Tucker Lukehart all had fumble recoveries, and Jeff Beasley intercepted a pass.
Beasley also broke up four passes for Vacaville, which held three Davis quarterbacks to a combined 3-for-24 passing for just 31 yards.
The Spartans did manage 99 of their 101 rushing yards in the second half, but never came close to scoring, even as Vacaville substituted freely.
Grace Davis finished the season at 6-5.
