Vacaville High School rolls to 61-27 victory over Rodriguez BY TIM ROE: VACAVILLE REPORTER
Domination was an understatement. Coleman Christensen simply shook his head when he thought about the way Vacaville High School's offense manhandled visiting Rodriguez in its 2011 football opener on Friday night. "It's going to be interesting to see what we can do if we can do both (run and pass)," Christensen said after throwing for two touchdowns -- in the first seven minutes -- during the Bulldogs' 61-27 win at Tom Zunino Stadium. "Anything on the outside worked," Christensen added. "The line did a great job of keeping them inside the box, and the outside was wide open." Everything was wide open as the Bulldogs rolled up 381 of their 528 yards in the first half. In fact, a running clock chewed up most of the second half, and the Bulldogs substituted liberally, to keep things from being even more lopsided. Christensen finished with five completions in just seven attempts for 81 yards, including TD tosses of 20 yards to Curtis Goins and 28 yards to Jacob Te'o. Nic Ardave and Gordie Clary also saw plenty of action at quarterback, although the Bulldogs were long done throwing when Clary entered the game. Fourteen Bulldogs added 402 yards rushing, led by 60 yards and three scores from Melvin Mason. "This was definitely a good spot for us," Vacaville head coach Mike Papadopoulos said. "We cleaned up a lot of things. We definitely did well, both offensively and defensively." Mason added a 10-yard TD run late in the first period as Vacaville jumped out to a 21-0 lead. The Bulldogs held the speedy Mustangs in check for most of the night, led by Johnny Schupp, Sean Carrington and others. Max Held added an 11-yard scoring run, and Mason scored from 15 and three yards, all before halftime. Te'o, Daniel Mewborn and Marwin Wilson scored in the second half. Held and Jared Paulin finished with 57 yards each, and David Mewborn added 49 yards rushing. The only Rodriguez scores came on long runs up the middle. Myles Burton had TD runs of 75 and 80 yards, and quarterback Jordan Riggins scored from 73 yards out. Alex Wilson added a 63-yard scoring run on the final play of the game. Vacaville plays Sept. 10 at Marin Catholic.
